Global Renewable Energy Capacity Hits Record 4,500 GW as Solar Leads the Charge
The International Energy Agency reports that global renewable energy capacity has reached an all-time high, with solar power installations accounting for three-quarters of new additions in the first half of 2026.
Renewables Reach New Heights
Global renewable energy capacity has surpassed 4,500 gigawatts for the first time, according to the latest data from the International Energy Agency (IEA). Solar photovoltaic installations continue to dominate new additions, accounting for approximately 75% of all new renewable capacity added in the first half of 2026.
Solar's Unstoppable Rise
The cost of solar panels has fallen a further 15% year-on-year, making solar the cheapest form of electricity generation in most markets worldwide. China remains the largest installer, but significant growth has been recorded across Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Wind Power Growth Accelerates
Offshore wind capacity has also seen strong growth, particularly in the North Sea region where several major projects have come online. The UK, Denmark, and the Netherlands have all expanded their offshore wind portfolios significantly.
What This Means for the Energy Transition
While the growth figures are encouraging, experts caution that the pace of deployment needs to double to meet the Paris Agreement goals. Grid infrastructure, energy storage, and permitting processes remain key bottlenecks that governments must address urgently.
