A private nuclear fusion startup has sustained net energy gain — producing more energy from fusion reactions than was put in — for over 60 seconds in a commercial-scale prototype reactor. While commercial fusion power remains years away, the achievement represents a genuine breakthrough.
What Happened
The prototype used a magnetic confinement approach, holding a plasma of hydrogen isotopes at temperatures exceeding 100 million degrees Celsius. For 63 seconds, the reactor produced 1.4 times the energy consumed to initiate and sustain the reaction.
Why It Matters
Fusion promises nearly limitless clean energy with no carbon emissions, no long-lived radioactive waste, and no risk of meltdown. If it can be commercialised, it would fundamentally reshape the global energy landscape.
The Road Ahead
The company cautions that a path to a commercial power plant remains at least a decade away. Sustaining net energy gain for minutes is very different from running a power station 24 hours a day. But the milestone has attracted significant new investment and renewed optimism in a field long accustomed to the joke that fusion is always 30 years away.
